  • ‘What The Folk’ Theme Night

Category: Themed Club Nights @ The Exmouth ‘What The Folk’ Theme Night

    October 21, 2019

Following last times very successful C&W night, the theme for the next open mic night is ‘WTF – What The Folk’ a celebration of ‘folk music’. So we are looking for folk music in all its many forms, be it traditional British folk songs such as ‘Barbara Allen’, ‘She Moves Through The Fair’ or ‘Scarborough Fair’; or works from the folk revival by Bob Dylan, The Dubliners or Fairport Convention; or songs by more modern singers like Eliza Carthy, Sam Lee or The Unthanks. Go on surprise us!
The “WTF – What The Folk” open mic night will be held on Monday 21st. October in place of the normal club night.
As usual, songs can be performed individually or by groups and, depending on how many people sign up, you may be able to perform more than one song. You are also all welcome to help the performers out and sing along with the songs – just like at a folk club.
To register your chosen song send an email to g.e.harrison@blueyonder.co.uk or tell me on a club night and I’ll (in combination with Paddy) compile a list of songs/performers on the website. The Exmouth have asked us to ensure that there is NO Morris dancing and don’t forget that if you have your finger in your ear when you sing you won’t be able to play your ukulele…

    James Clem @ The Exmouth

    October 28, 2019

Several years ago myself and a few other club members attended the ‘Ukulele Hooley’ in Dublin and one of the performers and workshop presenters there was James Clem from Portland, Oregon. I’d noticed that James is also a blues guitarist and so I got to play harmonica with him on a couple of occasions and we’ve kept in touch since then.

James is coming to the Cotswolds on holiday in late October and has approached me to see if he could play anywhere while he’s here. ChUG have therefore decided to feature James on the club night of 28 October – the first hour will be a normal club night, we’ll have a slightly earlier break and then James will appear at 9 o’clock, with the first 20 minutes being a brief workshop and the remaining time being a performance – as well as blues James also plays pop songs and Americana.

We have decided that James’ appearance will be to a limited audience of 40 club members, with places allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and we will be charging £3.00 for the performance.

Tickets for James are now available from myself. (For those who would like to see James but were not able to get a ticket – or would like to see him again – I will hopefully be presenting him at another venue in Cheltenham details to follow when confirmed.)

You can see James performing here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUyYotO8dh8
Or on many other videos on YouTube.
